Toenail Conditions

Three common toenail conditions that we see at Ankle & Foot of Edmonds are fungal toenails, ingrown toenails, and black and blue toenails. Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, is a condition that develops when a microscopic fungus enters the toenail, causing the nail to become thick and discolored. Anyone can get toenail fungus, but it people over the age of 60 are affected more frequently. Ingrown toenails are nails that curve downward and grow into the skin, usually at the sides of the nail. The most common cause of ingrown toenails is improper nail trimming. A black and blue toenail is caused by an injury to the skin beneath the toenail. The toenail itself does not change color, but as blood and fluid collect beneath the nail plate, the nail begins to appear black. If you’re suffering from a toenail condition, schedule an appointment with the podiatrists at Ankle & Foot of Edmonds.
