Soothing Foot Stretches

Individuals might choose to stretch their feet for any number of reasons. This is because stretching the feet offers a range of different health benefits. For example, some individuals opt to incorporate foot stretches into their daily health routine because they can increase flexibility, mobility, and range of motion in the feet. Additionally, others choose to stretch their feet because of the soothing capacity of the stretches. In other words, stretching the feet can soothe pain. Pain felt from plantar fasciitis in particular can be soothed by performing certain foot stretches. Rolling the bottoms of the feet on a frozen water bottle can effectively stretch out and soothe the plantar fascia. If you are someone that wants to soothe foot pain through stretches, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist for treatment.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with one of our podiatrists from Ankle & Foot of Edmonds. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

Plantar Fasciitis From Wearing Flip-Flops

Flip-flops are foot coverings most appropriate for wearing in gym locker room areas, the beach, and around the swimming pool. While easy to put on and take off, these thin-soled sandals lack proper support, especially at the arch area, and can cause plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is a painful foot ailment that happens when the plantar fascia, the band of connective tissue that runs from the heels to the toes, becomes irritated or inflamed. The pain from plantar fasciitis is particularly bad when taking one’s first steps in the morning, walking, or standing for a prolonged time. This condition, left untreated, can also cause a heel spur or a calcium deposit to develop. Rest, stretching, and strength training exercises can help relieve pain from plantar fasciitis. However, if the pain does not decrease, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist to diagnose the condition and obtain treatment options properly.

Flip-flops can cause a lot of problems for your feet. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Ankle & Foot of Edmonds. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

Flip-flops have managed to become a summer essential for a lot of people. While the shoes may be stylish and easy to slip on and off, they can be dangerous to those who wear them too often. These shoes might protect you from fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, but they can also give you foot pain and sprained ankles if you trip while wearing them.

When Are They Okay to Wear?

Flip-flops should only be worn for very short periods of time. They can help protect your feet in places that are crawling with fungi, such as gym locker rooms. Athlete’s foot and plantar warts are two common fungi that flip-flops may help protect your feet against.

Why Are They Bad for My Feet?

These shoes do not offer any arch support, so they are not ideal for everyday use. They also do not provide shock absorption or heel cushioning which can be problematic for your feet. Additionally, you may suffer from glass cuts, puncture wounds, and stubbed toes since they offer little protection for your feet.

More Reasons Why They Are Bad for Your Feet

  • They Slow You Down
  • May Cause Blisters and Calluses
  • Expose Your Feet to Bacteria

Arthritis Can Affect the Toes

When arthritis develops in the foot, the toes are the most often affected. Arthritis is defined as chronic inflammation that is often accompanied by tenderness, swelling, stiffness, and pain. Toe arthritis is caused by gradual wear and tear of the cartilage. This is what cushions the bones that surround the joints, and is found in two forms of arthritis. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common form of this condition, in addition to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which is an autoimmune disease. The bottom of the big toe can become sore with arthritis, and may become worse while walking and standing. The range of motion may be limited, and this may be a result of the loss of cartilage between the bones. Treatment for arthritis can begin after a diagnosis has confirmed it. There are various types of relief that can be found, and it may start by wearing high-quality shoes. If you are afflicted with arthritis in the feet, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can offer you treatment solutions that are best for you.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Ankle & Foot of Edmonds. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Children’s First Shoes

Children’s feet are flexible and pliable when they are born. Each foot has 26 bones that will harden as the time for walking approaches. This generally occurs between eight and 18 months, and often parents notice their child walks with their toes inward. This usually corrects itself as the muscles, ligaments, and tendons become stronger within the foot. It is beneficial for the child to walk barefoot while indoors, and the foot can strengthen as the toes grip the floor. When it is time to walk outdoors, it is beneficial for the first pair of shoes to be made of flexible materials with a flat sole, and the feet need to be measured every few months to determine the correct shoe size. Additionally, the toes need to move freely in the chosen shoes, and laces or straps are recommended that can help to prevent excess movement. If you have questions about what type of shoes to purchase for your child’s growing feet, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can address any concerns you may have.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact one of our podiatrists of Ankle & Foot of Edmonds. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.
