Bunions

A bunion is an abnormal, bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. It forms when the bone or tissue at the big toe joint moves out of place. Over time, the big toe angles in toward the other toes. This abnormal position enlarges the big toe joint and causes the big toe to crowd the other toes. Sometimes, the big toe overlaps another toe. Because this joint carries a lot of the body’s weight while walking, bunions can cause extreme pain if left untreated. A bunion can also form on the joint of the fifth (pinkie) toe and is called a bunionette, or tailor’s bunion. Dr. Wardle, Dr. O’Rourke, and Dr. Nilson can treat bunions either conservatively or with surgical correction.
