Keeping Your Feet Healthy: Standing Job Edition

Standing for eight hours a day can be a real pain in the foot.

Whether you’re a cashier or car salesman, theme park attendant or thespian, standing all day can really affect your feet. Those working on hard floors (think hard flooring in a supermarket or concrete at a tradeshow) face even higher chances of developing foot problems.

Foot Problems Caused by Standing

When you stand for long periods of time, it prevents your blood from getting where it needs to go due to gravity. Since your blood needs to go against the flow, some get ‘stuck’ and pool in the veins.

Plantar Fasciitis.

Standing all day means your feet are constantly supporting the weight of your body. That isn’t easy, and sometimes your foot tissue stretches too far.

Various foot pain and swelling.

The longer your feet support your body, the more they’ll hurt. If your job involves frequent lifting of objects or running back and forth, that just gives your feet more opportunity to bend in odd ways, which causes injury.

If you stand in one place for long periods of time, you aren’t using your muscles. That makes them incapable of pumping fluids back to the heart, which results in swelling.

How to Care For Your Feet in a Standing Job

And that’s only a partial list. On the bright side, there’s plenty to do on your end to ensure that your standing shift doesn’t mangle your feet.

1. Move!

The easiest way to protect your feet is to move. As we mentioned previously, standing in one place causes swelling. Use your muscles to prevent them from becoming stagnant. As an added bonus, a bit of movement can burn calories and even lower heart disease risk!

Taking a walk is the best way to go. However, if you can’t leave your assigned area because of your job, find time to stretch in place. Give your feet break by shifting your weight to different areas and increase blood flow. If you can take a break to sit for a bit, that’s great too! Anything that lessens the burden on your feet.

2. Wear the Right Shoes

We mention this in every blog we write about protecting your feet from the wear and tear of sports like soccer and tennis. However, your chosen set of footwear is just as important on the job as it is on the field.

Different jobs will require different types of footwear. Those that lift heavy objects in a warehouse might want to consider tough boots with protective outer layers. On the other hand, if you’re a waiter at a high-dollar restaurant, the dress code might require a nicer set of footwear. However, even these types of shoes come in variants with the proper amount of padding and support.

At the end of the day, you are the only one that knows the unique stresses of your job. Speak with your manager and work together to find the perfect pair of shoes that combines style or uniform code with comfort and functionality. Ask your doctor for his or her shoe recommendation and ask if they have any custom orthotics ideas.

3. Know Your Limits

For some jobs, a certain amount of damage to your feet is inevitable. It comes with the territory. That’s why you should have a home footcare regimen after working all day. Ice and cold baths work miracles, as do stretching and a self-massage.

But if your feet continue to hurt despite your home remedies, it may be time to contact your doctor. Don’t try to work through the pain. You may think that you’re doing your boss and coworkers a favor, but working through chronic pain will lead to bigger injuries down the line. And having you out for a few days to recuperate is vastly preferable to finding a replacement when you’re on crutches or in a wheelchair.
